'Gone Baby Gone': A tough but sensitive look at humanity's dark side
-Posted by: Quivi
Gone Baby Gone Directed by Ben Affleck (U.S.)
For his first time behind the camera as a director, the actor Ben Affleck has chosen a brooding, serious drama about missing children, wayward parents and idealism lost and regained. "Gone Baby Gone" is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, who wrote the similarly themed "Mystic River," which Clint Eastwood turned into a modern classic.
If Affleck hasn't raised his material to that rarefied level, he has taken a satisfyingly tough look into conscience, to those dark places where some men also go astray. ... Read More ...

Michelle Monaghan and Bobby Farrelly Interview
-Posted by: Quivi
Michelle Monaghan is in an enviable position, spending a weekend promoting two incredibly different films. She stars opposite Casey Affleck in brother Ben's directorial debut Gone Baby Gone and the Farrelly Brothers' new film, The Heartbreak Kid. A remake of the 1972 comedy with Ben Stiller assuming the Charles Grodin role as a man who meets the perfect girl (Monaghan) on his honeymoon. Asked to choose a favorite between the Affleck brothers and the Farrelly duo, Monaghan politely balks. But, as we found out, she did just return from a European vacation with Bobby (and their spouses). Bobby and Michelle sat down together in L.A. to chat to UGO about road trips, comedy, and the unkindest of cuts.
UGO: So much of this film is about misunderstandings. Were there ever takes where you thought it wouldn't work or you'd gone too far?
BOBBY FARRELLY: I don't think so much in the takes, but we did spend a lot of time in the writing on that whole part where [Michelle] thinks that his wife was murdered, and Ben thinks that she knows about his wife and she's cool with it. That's a critical moment because, if it doesn't work and the audience isn't understanding what each one is thinking, then the whole movie collapses. It was dangerous for us, filming it. I kept thinking, "Gee, I hope this works, because we're in big trouble if it doesn't." But they really sold it. ... Read More ...

This Week's Hot Pick: 'Mission: Impossible: III'
-Posted by: Quivi
As usual with film series, the third time is not the charm for "Mission: Impossible." "III" tries hard to offer something different, and with virtually non-stop action sequences, for which no expense was spared, and Tom Cruise running around its sets for more than two hours, the film is not without appeal.
But the efforts of new director J.J. Abrams (TV's "Lost" and "Alias") to invigorate the cycle with deeper character development and a jazzier action style fail to generate much interest or excitement. It was a disappointment, too, at the domestic box office, collecting just $133 million -- although that still makes it the year's 10th-highest-grossing movie. ... Read More ...
